After going full speed for 36 minutes, Blacksburg finally ran out of steam in dropping an exciting 70-61 double-overtime loss to Hidden Valley Friday night in the championship game of the Region IV Boys Basketball Tournament contested at Northside High School in Roanoke.

The Bruins (20-8) will play the winner of tonight’s R.E. Lee/Waynesboro at a neutral site near Staunton in the Group AA State quarterfinals next week.

Blacksburg appeared as they would upset Hidden Valley (27-1), as the Bruins held an eight point lead, 47-39, with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter. However, the Titans reeled off eight straight points to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Trailing 56-54 in the first overtime period, Blacksburg’s Tyler Holmes nailed a jumper with four ticks left on the clock to tie the game at 56-all, thus sending it into another four-minute OT period.

Hidden Valley would outscore the Bruins 14-5 in the second OT period give the Titans their fourth win of the season against Blacksburg by a 70-61 margin.

The Bruins trailed by six at the half, 26-20, and by three going into the fourth quarter, 37-34.

Junior Brown led Blacksburg with 15 points. Greg Keys added 12 points and Daniel Mitchell added 11 points.

Ben Boggs paced Hidden Valley with a game-high 22 points. Nelson Musselman chipped in with 20 points and Logan Singleton added 17 points.
