Radford, Va.- Alex Gregory of the Radford University baseball team has been selected to play in the 2008 New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game, July 20 at Fuessenich Park in Torrington Conn. A member of the Newport Gulls’ summer league club, Gregory will start as the South Division’s designated hitter.
Gregory, a native of Great Falls, Va., is currently tied for first among league leaders in home runs with six. The 6-2 rising senior leads the Gulls in RBIs with 24, ranks second in doubles (6) and is batting .293 midway through the campaign.
Prior to playing in the NECBL, Gregory played in the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League the last two summers where he was an all-league performer. Last summer, he was a member of the CGL All-Star squad that played against the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League.
A two-time all-conference selection and member of the VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) second-team, Gregory captured his second straight Big South batting title this past season with a .401 clip, becoming just the second player in league history to hit over .400 in consecutive slates. As a sophomore, Gregory earned his first of two CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors while finishing sixth nationally with an average of .430.
As a junior, Gregory led the Highlanders in home runs (14), RBIs (51), runs scored (56), slugging percentage (.667), on-base percentage (.504) and base on balls (39). Along with being named to the conference’s all-tournament team, he was voted the Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year for his respective sport.
Under first-year head coach Joe Raccuia, the Highlanders raced out to their best start in school history before finishing the 2008 campaign with 24 victories, the most since the 2000 season. Along with winning a pair of contests in the Big South Tournament, Radford recorded three wins over NCAA Tournament participants, including then-ranked No. 23 Charlotte on the road.
About the New England Collegiate Baseball League Founded in 1993, the NECBL began its direction under George Foster, former Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets All-Star and Major League home run leader and league founder Emmy Award-winning television producer/director Joseph Consentino. Play started in 1994 and today the NECBL has become a strong twelve-team league that plays in all six New England states and recruits players attending U.S. colleges from New England, the other forty-four States and foreign countries.
The League starts its summer season in early June and plays an eight week 42-game schedule. The League Championship is determined by a playoff in early August. Each year our top players are scouted and selected in the MLB Draft.
Any student who wishes to play in our League must be currently enrolled in a NCAA sanctioned College or University, be in good academic standing, have completed one year of athletic eligibility and have at least one year of eligibility remaining. The league strongly suggests that student-athletes have their College coach and/or a MLB scout recommend them to any or all of our General Managers. |
