The 2008 edition of the bowling competition for the Commwealth Games began on Friday...............
with an excellent showing of senior competitiors. The event, which kicks into high gear beginning tomorrow morning at the NRV SuperBowl on Arbor Drive in Christiansburg, will include three days of competition involving seniors, youth and adult (men and women). Tomorrow's activities include over 200 registered youths with the same goal of capturing the elusive gold, silver or bronze. As of this writing, there have been 315 competitors who have registered, establishing an all time record. The numbers show an increase of 25% over last year's impressive showing. Bowling remains one of the activities that spread over no demograhic restrictions. One of the best examples of the type of competitor that the Games produce was Allene Mills, a Roanoke, Va. native who has bowled in the Commonwealth Games 18 out of the last 19 years. Mills, who is still competing at the age of 87, bowled in the first year the Games hosted the sport. Shw bowled five games Friday. Ms. Mills began her career in the church leagues. She has bowled on a regular basis in Roanoke and Vinton, having rolled in as many as four leagues at one time According to Mills, she "sometimes throws a hook, sometimes a straight ball". Competing in Friday's action gives her a "feeling of pride and plans to be here next year, depending on her health.(something we all could say). Mills is just one of the competitors that has kept the Games alive and prosperous, no matter the weather, the economy or any unforseen circumstances. The NRV SuperBowl has hosted the event for the past six years. They have tweaked the tournament and run a very effecient event. It involves three day of competition but preparation is done months in advance. The SuperBowl, which has become known for hosting events such as this one and the International Moose tournament, produces one of the few major events held outside the Roanoke Valley. WWW.NRVSPORTS.COM will be covering this event with final results in all divisions in Monday afternoon's edition on the local sports site.
