Radford, Va.- After a successful five years as Radford University’s assistant softball coach, Maggie Johnson has fulfilled one of her goals when she was named the head...

coach at Georgia Southern University, announced by Director of Athletics Sam Baker.

"Radford University has been a great place for me to begin my collegiate coaching career," stated Johnson. "Amy Kvilhaug and Mickey Dean have given me a wealth of knowledge and experience to take with me into the world of head coaching. I have no doubt Coach Dean will continue to build upon the recent success of the Radford University Softball program."

Johnson joined the RU softball program in 2003 and played a major part in its rise to success. The Highlanders have recorded 200 victories (200-121, .623) and increased their win total in each of the last five seasons, including a school-best 46-15 mark in 2008.

As Radford’s hitting instructor, RU’s bats have not slowed down since her arrival. The Highlanders have set numerous individual and team records under her tutelage, most notably the team home run mark that has been broken the past four seasons, reaching 57 in 2008. Last season, they also set records for batting average (.307), slugging percentage (.486) and on base percentage (.361), a mark that had held up for 12 years.

"When I took the job at Radford, I realized how important Maggie was to the softball program," head coach Mickey Dean. "She has done a great job the past five seasons. Georgia Southern has been rewarded with her patience and hard work. I couldn’t be any happier for Maggie."
