David "Cougardave" Gravely

If the old saying " a picture is worth a thousand words", the Pulaski County local sports scene will receive the most creative words in the area. With that in mind, www.nrvsports.com is pleased to announce a special partnership with "Cougar Dave" to bring all of Pulaski County sports into focus on the local community sports site..

According to www.nrvsports.com Managing Partner Randy Thompson, "Both John Hale and myself believe that the Pulaski County area is key to bring to our readers the most comprehensive coverage of local sports in the New River Valley." He added, "Whether it is Pulaski County football, basketball, spring sports or recreational acitvities, Cougar Dave has more knowledge and ability to bring that area's sporting activities to the site than anyone in the area." When the owners met with Cougar Dave to discuss this partnership, they came to the same conclusion as he did. The ultimate goal is to provide a prescence for the young athletes in the area, hopefully helping them as they have opportunities for further growth from colleges as they receive the publicity that they will earn.

Cougar Dave will provide both video and photography, as well as written content to www.nrvsports.com. The Pulaski County native exemplifies the same competitive nature

that makes atletes thrive. When asked to write a little about his life, Cougar Dave "pulled no punches". In his own words, Dave sent in the following summary:

Working with rec league football.

Born and raised in Pulaski, graduated from PCHS in 1987 and immediately went into the Army. Spent 11 years 1 month 29 days jumping out of airplanes and blowing stuff up and decided to get out because my kids were getting ready to start school. Nine months after getting out I was crushed in a core machine at New River Castings. I was dead several times that first night. Broke my back in several places, broke a bunch of ribs on my left side, my ribs punctured both lungs, and I had a terrible hangnail. After a lengthy recovery I started to get into photography and working with kids. It started with coaching rec league girls basketball. Followed that up with girls softball, then soccer. Got into football after that, and since then I've coached every sport Pulaski County offers at the rec level. I started taking pics as a hobby, to give me something to do because I was bored. Dave Bissett approached me one night and ask if he could use some of the pics for the newspaper, and from that things started to grow. I started taking pics during the 2002 Cougar football season, and have been doing it since. I have also been a contributing writer at times for several other newspapers and was scheduled to write for a Virginia based sports magazine until their deal fell through. I offer the pictures I take to the kids in the hopes that they will motivate them to do well in the classroom. If you want your pictures taken, you have to be on a team or in a group, and to be on that team or in that group you have to be in good standing with your school grade wise and behavior wise. While some photographers or companies charge outragous prices for their pics, I offer low resolution copies of my pictures free of charge, and high resolution copies at far below the average market cost. I dont do it for the money, I do it to try to help kids become more mot ivated about sports and in turn hope that it helps them achieve in the classroom. I have two kids, a dog, and four cats....they are all goofy.
