July 25, 2008, Pulaski, VA- New River Post 68 completed a sweep of the District 9 New River Valley Jamboree on July 19 and 20th held at Radford University and Calfee Park. New River defeated Big Island on Saturday 7-2. The win set the stage for a Sunday morning contest against Salem with the realization that a win would clinch the season title for New River. The New River contingent jumped to an early lead and defeated Salem 6-1 to clinch the district title. Later that evening New River edged Rocky Mount by a score of 5-3. The successful weekend improved the team's record to 17-2 overall and 10-0 in district play. District play continued Thursday night at Naff field in Rocky Mount, Virginia. The New River diamondmen opposed eleventh seeded Rocky Mount. After four innings and the score tied at four runs apiece, the higher seeded New River team's bats exploded. They added the "double nickle" by scoring five runs in the fifth inning plus another total of five runs in the following innings to put the game awary. The game would end after seven innings with the score 14-4 and the league's "mercy rule" being put in effect. New River returns to action Saturday at Ferrum College Field against the winner between Roanoke and Salem. Game time is 4:00 pm.
