Radford, Va.- A strong non-conference slate, which includes trips to Virginia, George Mason, West Virginia and Wake Forest, plus home contests with Duquesne and James Madison highlight the 2008-09 Radford University men’s basketball schedule as announced by second-year head coach Brad Greenberg Monday. Along with the addition of talented newcomers, Radford welcomes back all five starters, including four double-figure scorers from last year’s club.
“Our staff and team are excited about this year’s extremely challenging schedule,” commented Coach Greenberg. “We’ve set some lofty goals and will work very hard to achieve the greatest success.”
Due to renovations to the Dedmon Center, a place the Highlanders have called home since 1981, Radford will open the campaign at Peters Hall starting with Brevard College on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
Following a 7 p.m. tip with Bridgewater (Nov. 18), Radford will conclude the month of November away from home, beginning with a Nov. 21 contest in Charlottesville against the Virginia Cavaliers. On Nov. 25, the Highlanders will battle in-state foe William & Mary before concluding their first of four three-game road trips at Navy (Nov. 29).
Just five games into the season, Radford will open Big South play against Gardner-Webb (Dec. 4), one of two institutions to join the league this season. Two days after entertaining the Bulldogs, RU will host Winthrop (Dec. 6), which has won the last four conference tournament titles.
After two tough league tests, the Highlanders will wrap up their longest homestand of 2008-09 with games against Duquesne (Dec. 10) and James Madison. Radford’s Dec. 14 date with JMU will be its first of two straight versus the Colonial Athletic Association as the Highlanders travel to George Mason for a Dec. 19 matchup.
“We want folks all over the state and throughout the region to know more about Radford basketball and the university. We can help do this by building rivalries with George Mason, William & Mary, JMU and Navy.”
Two days before Christmas, Radford will head to Morgantown, W.Va., for a meeting with West Virginia, one of four teams on this year’s schedule that participated in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
"We want to play some of the best teams in the nation every year and compete against in-state and regional opponents,” commented Greenberg. “It’s important to test ourselves against ACC teams like Virginia and Wake Forest and our BIG EAST neighbor, WVU.”
Greenberg’s Highlanders will conclude 2008 with a 7 p.m. tip at Wake Forest Dec. 30, prior to closing the regular season with 16 consecutive against Big South competition.
The 2009 Big South Tournament will begin March 3 with the Championship game being televised live on ESPN2 March 7.
