Friday night was a special night in Pearisburg at Giles High gave the ultimate honor to former Spartans head coach Steve Ragsdale by naming the field after the legendary innovative mentor. The Blue Demons of Christiansburg ruined the party by rallying for a 35-14 victory over the host Spartans The game took an additional magic as Virginia Tech bound Cody Journell returned the opening kickoff for 93 yards to electrify the boisterous home crowd. Journell's PAT (his specialty) gave the Spartans an early 7-0 lead before the fans could find their seats. Christiansburg's Ryan Fisher and Giles' Travis Robertson exchanged short TD runs in the first stanza. After Brad Cox and Journell added the respective conversions, the two teams ended with first quarter score- Giles 14, Christiansburg 7. Christiansburg matched Giles fourteen point explosion with an equal number of points in the second quarter. Zach Weller's 18 yard TD run and Cox's PAT tied the score at 14-14. With under one minute to play, Stephen Wills connected with speedster Chris Dobbins on a 57 yard TD pass play. Cox added the extra point to send the Montgomery County team into the locker room clinging to a 21-14 lead. The game was sealed with a long eighty yard drive on Christiansburg's initial possession of the second half. Keith Johnson, the Demons leading rusher for the game, capped the "back-breaking" drive with a two yard plunge. The defense got into the scoring act for the final touchdown of the game as the Blue Demons' Tyler Tennessen recovered a Giles fumble in the end zone. Cox's conversion ended a perfect five for five in extra point conversions to bring the final score to 35-14. Johnson led the rushing attack for Christiansburg with 95 yards while running mate Greg Lee added 84 yards from scrimmage. Led by his fifty seven yard TD pass, Christiansburg, which ran for a team total of 252 yards rushing, was aided in the passing game by Wills with 55 yards through the air. The win pushed the Chrisitansburg record to 2-0 for the season. The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-2 on the young season. |
