Freshmen forward Ashley Johnson’s (Springfield, Va.) header in the 65th minute gave Radford the advantage and ultimately the win Thursday night at Donald D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. Radford set up for a corner kick and it was played into the box. The ball was returned back out to SharDavia Bell (Manassas, Va.), who crossed it back into in the box and Johnson headed it into the bottom right of the net. The goal by Johnson, her 6th of the season, broke a 1-1 tie and kept Radford undefeated at 6-0-3. Even though it was a chilly night, the game itself was heated. A pair of red cards by each team in a first half altercation caused the game to be 10 on 10 the rest of the way. Radford’s Latrice Lee (Woodbridge, Va.) struck first, scoring off a rebound of a blocked shot in the 22nd minute, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 advantage going into the half. Lee’s goal gave her 3 on the season. Longwood came out firing in the 2nd half. Michelle DeSieno tied the game up 4 minutes into the half on a rebound of a shot off the hands of the Radford goalkeeper. Radford’s defense held off the Lancers the rest of the way to continue the 2nd best start in program history. Longwood’s final stats were 1 goal on 11 shots, no corner kicks, and 11 saves. Radford ended the match with 2 goals on 24 shots, 4 corner kicks and Lisa Lubke (Columbus, Ohio) had 4 saves. The Highlanders will continue Big South play on October 8 against VMI. |
