Bill Matthews, former Virginia Tech athletic director and head basketball coach, passed away at his home after a long illness. Matthews, originally from Patrick County, made his fame as the Hokie's basketball coach by defeating the legendary Adolph Rupp and the University of Kentucky in Tech's opening game in 1962. It was also Matthews' debut as head coach. In 1964 he became the top administrative assistant to Frank Moseley and then under Bill Dooley from 1978 to 1986. The NRVSports.com staff expresses our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Matthews family. He will be greatly missed. Matthews leaves behind his wife, four children and six grandchildren. |
